Nestled beneath the striking San Jacinto Mountains in Palm Springs, California, you’ll discover a place long cherished for its relaxation, art, and culture. Palm Springs is famous for its unique mid-century modern architecture, serene desert scenery, and lively LGBTQ+ community.
From top-notch resorts to exciting nightlife and cultural adventures, Palm Springs offers something for LGBTQ+ travelers of all kinds. And one of the city’s standout events is The Dinah Shore Weekend, a lesbian and queer paradise.
My wife, Jessie, and I were newcomers until recently and couldn’t contain our excitement when we received an invitation to attend our first Dinah Shore Weekend in September 2023. We first learned about The Dinah while watching Showtime’s The L Word, and we were captivated by the idea of being in a place where we could be ourselves, surrounded by like-minded people, having a carefree and fun time.
This epic event took place at the stunning Margaritaville Resort, and let me tell you, it was a weekend we won’t soon forget.
Day 1
While Jessie wrapped up work in Las Vegas, my solo road trip to Palm Springs began. The moment I stepped into the Margaritaville Resort, the energy was palpable, with the anticipation of The Dinah electrifying the air. The staff welcomed me and the other attendees with open arms, and the stunning surroundings instantly put me in a party mood.
As the sun set, I headed to the Reforma, one of Palm Springs’s renowned bars and entertainment venues. The energy there was through the roof! This event sets the tone for future festivities. I met fellow attendees while DJ Gracy D and DJ China G set the mood, and each room was packed with people ready to let loose.
The night’s highlight had to be Atlanta-based singer Oomy Oomy’s electrifying performance. The Emerging Artist contest winner’s beats were infectious, the dance floor was alive, and I couldn’t have asked for a better start to an unforgettable weekend.
Day 2
Day two started early with a quick breakfast and coffee in my room before it was time for the highly anticipated Girl Spot Pool Party.
Later in the day, the pool area was transformed into a paradise of live music and celebration. Famed Australian drummer and singer, G-Flip took to the stage and treated us to an incredible performance. The poolside vibes were fantastic, with people enjoying the music, swimming, and simply having a blast.
But the surprises didn’t stop there. As G-Flip wrapped up their set, their wife, Netflix’s Selling Sunset star Chrishell Stause, and Dinah founder Mariah Hanson surprised them onstage with a cat birthday cake meant to reflect, well, ya know, and we all sang a zealous “Happy Birthday.” It was a touching and enthusiastic moment that showcased the sense of community at The Dinah Shore Weekend.
After a day of poolside revelry, I retreated to my room for a quick nap and to freshen up before picking up my wife, Jessie, at the airport. I couldn’t wait for her to join me on this exciting trip.
We made our way to The Dinah’s Black and White Ball, a glamorous affair that was a feast for the eyes. The expression and diversity of the attendees were a testament to the inclusivity and love that The Dinah represents. The Margaritaville Ballroom was transformed into a glamorous setting, and the attendees arrived dressed to the nines in black and white attire.
The atmosphere was electric as 90s dance entertainer Black Box and rapper Doechii took the stage, delivering unforgettable performances. DJ Alex D and DJ Tatiana kept the evening lively as we danced in our stylish outfits with new friends and downed one too many tequila shots. It was a perfect way to end an extraordinary day.
Day 3
While there would be two more days of Dinah, Jess and I could unfortunately only spend one more day due to our schedule. However, our final day of The Dinah Shore Weekend was undoubtedly memorable and began with The L Word Pool Party. Hosted by The Real L Word star Rose Garcia and music by DJ Tatiana and DJ Mo, it was a whirlwind of excitement.
Another one of the day’s highlights was the Celebrity Dodgeball competition hosted by The Real L Word star Mikey Koffman and Lacy Stone of Revenge Body by Khloé Kardashian, held in the hotel’s garden area. Attendees and celebrities battled it out in an epic game of dodgeball. The spirit of competition was fierce, but the laughter and camaraderie made it an unforgettable experience.
Later, we returned to The L Word pool party to watch Los Angeles-native musician Phem’s captivating indie-pop performance.
On our final night, we gathered for The Dinah’s Hollywood-themed part. Filled with glamourous costumes and excitement, the Margaritaville Ballroom was again transformed into a star-studded haven, and the red carpet entrance set the stage for a night to remember.
DJ Les Ortiz and DJ Alex D, along with the mesmerizing Dinah dancers, put on a hypnotic show. Then, it was time for Princess Nokia to take the stage. The gender-nonconforming New York-based rapper and singer had everyone dancing with their risqué performance until the early hours. They were iconic.
Conclusion
On our journey back to Las Vegas, the memories of our unforgettable 3-night adventure at The Dinah lingered with a sense of euphoria. This extraordinary weekend in Palm Springs was a vibrant celebration infused with love, music, and the spirited essence of the LGBTQ+ community. Our hearts were brimming with joy, and our spirits were lifted as we returned to our everyday lives, fully aware that we had been a part of something truly special in the desert oasis of Palm Springs.
